Pregnancy is a time of rapid physical, mental, and emotional change, and yoga can teach you to adapt to these changes. It is both an ideal preparation for labor and delivery and a great way to get back into shape after birth.
Prenatal yoga gives your body increased strength, flexibility, and alignment. It also gives your mind and spirit enhanced clarity and calmness. The mindful awareness techniques that I teach include breathing and relaxation exercises that are supportive during pregnancy, labor, childbirth, and motherhood.
Yoga for labor and delivery provides a variety of tools that will relax, focus, and empower you during all the stages of labor and delivery. I teach yoga postures and breathing techniques that encourage the release of downward-flowing birth energy, as well as ways to use sound, breathing, and movement to ease discomfort and shorten labor. You will also learn how to manage backache and how to release the psoas muscle in order to allow the pelvis to open. Finally, in these classes, you will be able to practice a variety of birthing positions and the many uses of a birthing ball, an essential tool for well-being during both labor and the post-partum period.
Post-natal yoga focuses on strengthening the abdominal muscles, which become overstretched during pregnancy. The yoga postures I teach include pelvic floor strengthening and twists that help shrink the uterus. Restorative poses lessen fatigue and aid in recovery from childbirth. They also counteract the stress of interrupted sleep during your child’s infancy. A bonus is that many of the poses can be done with your baby or with the baby nearby.
